Capabilities and permissions

LearnBoard for Moodle defines three Moodle capabilities. Together with per-user sign-in and role mapping, they decide who can add blocks and who can see LearnBoard. This page is for the Moodle administrator.

  • block/learnboard:view: see LearnBoard through the shared workspace reader. Matters only without per-user sign-in.
  • block/learnboard:addinstance: add and arrange LearnBoard blocks on course and site pages.
  • block/learnboard:myaddinstance: add a LearnBoard block to your own Dashboard.
  • Change them like any Moodle capability, under Site administration > Users > Permissions > Define roles.
Capability Name in Moodle Context Risk Default roles
block/learnboard:view See LearnBoard analytics through the shared workspace reader Course Personal data Manager, Course creator, Teacher, Non-editing teacher
block/learnboard:addinstance Add a new LearnBoard block Block Spam, cross-site scripting Teacher, Manager
block/learnboard:myaddinstance Add a new LearnBoard block to the Dashboard System Spam, cross-site scripting Manager

block/learnboard:addinstance starts from the roles that have moodle/site:manageblocks, and block/learnboard:myaddinstance from those with moodle/my:manageblocks, so a site that changed those keeps its choices.

This capability only matters with per-user sign-in off. Then the only pass the plugin can get from LearnBoard is the shared reader, which sees every learner in the workspace, so the plugin gives it only to people who hold block/learnboard:view at site level:

  • site administrators, and
  • anyone with a role that has the capability, assigned in the system context, for example the Manager role at site level.

A teacher holds it in their own courses, not at site level, so without per-user sign-in a teacher sees no charts.

With per-user sign-in on, every signed-in person gets their own pass, limited by their role mapping, and this capability is not used.

Lets a person add a LearnBoard block to a course page, the front page or any other page, and arrange a custom block’s charts. Saving a layout checks this capability on the block. Someone with it who is editing the page always sees the block, even when Show to would hide it, and sees the plugin’s notices.

Lets a person add a LearnBoard block to their own Dashboard. By default only Managers have it, so students and teachers cannot add LearnBoard blocks to their own Dashboard. To give everyone a block, add it to the default Dashboard instead.

Who Can
Site administrators Install, connect and configure the plugin, edit role mapping. Always see every block.
People with moodle/site:config See Edit dashboards in LearnBoard on the LearnBoard page.
Anyone signed in Open /blocks/learnboard/sso.php when per-user sign-in is on. Guests never get a LearnBoard pass.
