Requirements

Check these before you install LearnBoard for Moodle. They are the same for a new site and for an upgrade.

  • Moodle 4.0 to 5.3.
  • PHP 7.3 or later, within the range your Moodle version supports.
  • Your Moodle site served over HTTPS.
  • MySQL or MariaDB, if LearnBoard reads your data through the plugin.
  • A LearnBoard workspace. The free plan is enough for the plugin.
Item Supported
Moodle 4.0 to 5.3 ($plugin->supported = [400, 503])
Lowest Moodle 4.0 (2022041900)
PHP 7.3 or later, within what your Moodle version accepts
Automatic main-menu entry Moodle 4.3 or later

On Moodle 4.0 to 4.2 everything works, but the LearnBoard item is not added to the main menu for you. You add it as a custom menu item instead. See The full-page view and main-menu link.

The plugin sends its keys and the identity of the signed-in person to LearnBoard, so it only talks to a LearnBoard address that starts with https://. A connection code with a plain http:// address is refused as not being a LearnBoard connection code.

LearnBoard reads your data by calling your site’s own address, so your Moodle must be reachable from the internet over HTTPS too. The data connector refuses requests that do not arrive over HTTPS.

The plugin installs and runs on every database Moodle supports. The data connector, the part that lets LearnBoard read your site’s reporting data, supports MySQL and MariaDB only, because LearnBoard’s reports are written in their SQL dialect.

On a PostgreSQL or Microsoft SQL Server site the connector answers “unsupported database”, and LearnBoard says so when you connect. The blocks, the LearnBoard page and sign-in still work; LearnBoard just needs another way to read your data, such as the Database option under Admin, Data sources in LearnBoard.

You need a LearnBoard workspace, and a workspace administrator who can open Admin, Data sources to make the connection code. The free plan is all the plugin needs.

Some features depend on the LearnBoard plan rather than on the plugin:

  • A chart whose LearnBoard screen is not in your plan shows in the chart picker as Not available and cannot be ticked.
  • Publishing a dashboard to everyone in the workspace starts at a higher plan. On any paid plan you can share a single dashboard with Moodle Embed (read-only) instead. See Linked dashboards.

The charts load from LearnBoard in the browser of the person viewing the page. Their browser must be able to reach your LearnBoard address, the same one the plugin uses.
